"From my experience, I gained an understanding of my responsibility to serve because I can, because I have been blessed to have the resources to turn away from my and my family's immediate needs and look  outward. I never expected to gain such a pressing understanding of my need to serve. I never expected to meet people who were so much "better" than I am, who had so much to teach me of compassion, of self sacrifice and of hope. I feel that I was literally healed by the people of El Salvador as they changed my perspective and expectations."

-Natalie Brown, El Salvador 2007

"HELP International has the perfect amount of structure to give you lots of support if you need it, and yet enough autonomy to feel empowered in making your own decisions and creating your own experience. I loved HELP International because through them I discovered what I could do as an individual to make a difference in the world, and then they helped me do it. Because of the training and leadership we had, we were prepared to be culturally sensitive and good examples of Americans, and the people of Mukono thought very highly of us. HELP isn't a huge organization and it doesn't have a ton of resources, but I was impressed at how well they organized this experience and it inspired me to return next summer."

-Kindra Clemence, Uganda 2007

Projects overview

Power of volunteers

What makes HELP International different from similar organizations, is that we believe in the power of our volunteers to initiate and manage their own projects. We recruit highly capable volunteers who are given over 20 hours of training. Volunteers are set up with trusted partners and supported by in-country directors. So, when volunteers get into a community they can create projects that fit their own talents and interests while being responsive to the specific needs of a community. Because of this, HELP International is involved in a wide range of projects including but not limited to:

Empowering communities

In most cases, the solutions to a community's needs can be found within the community itself. HELP volunteers work with local leaders to address needs as expressed by the local people. Community members take ownership of the projects and continue them after HELP volunteers leave. This creates a ripple effect as principles we teach are then proliferated throughout a community. We provide villages and communities with the resources necessary to solve their own problems.

Partnering for sustainability

With volunteers in each country for only four months each year, part of the HELP International recipe for success is partnering with local organizations and entities to ensure the continuity of our programs even after our volunteers return home. By partnering with grassroots organizations, volunteers have the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with local practitioners and discover ‘home-grown' solutions to regional poverty.

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

- Margaret Mead

Please understand that HELP International is not affiliated with the Network for Good. Network for Good is a charity designed to help and support small nonprofit organizations with online collections. We believe their service is very valuable to us, however you should know that they will retain 3% of your total donation to help cover the expense of credit card transactions. We find that for small and medium sized transactions this is very reasonable. Hence, if you are making a $1,000 donation, HELP International will only receive $970. The tax receipt that we send you will only cover the net donation that we receive. By printing a receipt from Network for Good, you may, however, deduct 100% of your donation from your personal taxes. If you are making a large contribution to the organization, we encourage you to contact the office or mail us a personal/company check to avoid any processing fees. This fee applies to phone-in credit card transactions as well.

Network for Good will allow you to make a donation to us on behalf of a volunteer or to specific projects. If you are donating to a specific project, please indicate that project or country in the "Designation" box.
